When he had him on the bank he fell back into the water and James leaped in after him and pushed him out on the bank again and carried him home. Then James brother said "I owe my life to James Stephson because only for him I would be drowned.
There were many great story tellers in Toneywarden but the best one was Patrick Harte and he lived about 80 years ago. He told stories about the Fenians ghosts, fairys and about the Danes. He told the following story about a ghost. Once upon a time I was in Drumshambo and I was coming home an old road outside the town one night and I met a black man with a carriage and two horses he was going at very quick speed and I went into the town and told all the people what I had seen. After that there wer all afraid to go that road after six o clock. There came a new guard to the town and he heard of the ghost.

    A Ghost Story
This is a ghost story related by Mr, Grogan. There is a gentleman's residence about a mile from my house. The name of this house is Ardrass Lodge. This was the former residence of Mr. McLoughery. Since this man died his ghost is seen walking his horse along the road and in the wood.
One night a man named James Clowney was coming from a dance in Straffan. As he approached this very dark wood he saw a figure walking towards him. When it came nearer to him he saw to his horror that it was the ghost of Mr. McLoughrey who was a long time dead. He got up on his bicycle and started for

    Wells
There are great wells in Dalkey. The most important ones are the Lady’s Well, the Captain's Well and St. Begnet's Well. There is a very old story attached to St. Begnet’s well. One night a man was rowing up the Sound in a boat. The night was very dark but suddenly a man appeared on the island. The man rowed to the island but when he arrived it disappeared. The man then saw a well and put his hand into the water. He suffered from rheumatism but was cured. There is a ghost story told about the Lady's. One night a man was passing by the top of the lane leading to the well when he heard the noise of running feet. He looked down and saw a man run out and dash himself against a big rock. It then disappeared. the reason of the ghost is that a man was running out of the lane and took the

A Ghost Story;- I heard a ghost story once about a family in Ballyshannon. The man of the house was a Protestant and he died. His son was as bad as himself and one night he invited the priest to a feast in the house. When all were assembled the son turned the conversation towards his deceased father and his present destination. The priest soon knew what he wanted him to do. The son then said "are you able to tell me where he is now"? The priest answered him in the affirmative but the rest of the guests implored him to stop. But he was determined not to withdraw and he went to the fireplace and prayed three times and shouted to the dead man to come.
Three times he called and at the third shout the smell of brimstone and smoke filled the room and the fire-place opened and the dead man came up through the floor. The priest inquired of him where he was when he called him. "When you called first I was in hell; when you shouted the second time I was at hell's gate and at the third shout I was here". "Now" said the priest "you will stay here until the end of time". So the windows were blocked up and the man

tones "What are you gaping at; begone or you shall be sorry because of this intrusion". After these words the apparition vanished.
The sweat poured down the man's face and after some time he staggered home. When he went home he took ill and he died that night. Before he died he told them of his vision. The listeners knew the story of the old castle and this is the story.
There was a man living in the castle and he had a niece who had a lot of money and he being very covetous killed her one night in order to get her fortune. Afterwards he was haunted by her vision and he went to the continent and got married and he died soon after this. He had one son and the son was the man to whom the ghost had spoken and who died after seeing it. After that night the ghost was never seen again.

Many Danish and Norwegian captains sailing their vessels into Westport Harbour still ask the pilots to point out Innisjaw and they tell the story of the hidden there by the Danes long ago and they say also that the story of the treasure is told in the folklore books in their country.

The priest turned round and inquired what had happened but when Martin told the priest his story, he told Martin about the death and burial of him but instead of Martin being buried it was the messenger. The priest told Martin that his wife was married again and if he wished he could hunt the other man but he said (himself) to the priest he would live by himself. The priest explained the story

there, and it is generally believed and really believed too, that the figure which appeared to Givens was that of one of the former monks of the Abbey that had come to set him to unearth the buried treasure. I have been told this story for gospel and given sound reasons to believe the gold was found. The person who told me the tale is about seventy two years and knew Mr. Givens well. He believes the tales an so do several others. It was not told, as many a ghost story with the intention of creating a sensation or giving a fright. It was told in quiet, as a matter of fact seriousness. They say there is an ancient altar still to be seen on which there is writing which nobody can read.

The following story was told in our house last Winter. Many years ago near Clarina there lived in an old mansion a rich man agus his wife. They had 3 beautiful daughters. Some ghost stories are very chilling. I heard this story from my uncles some time ago. Once upon a time when my two uncles were fishing they were near a quay called the Barn quay and they saw an object in a field above it, it was in the shape of a horse. It came to the edge of the cliff and turned into a man and he jumped down over the cliff and he knocked a great portion of it. My uncle’s stayed watching him and he turned into a horse again and was coming towards them and the object disappeared and my uncles went away and they saw the horse on the other side of the river. They got such a fright that they never went near that quay again. That story happened many years ago.

When Cromwell reached Dunleer he burned the church down, but it was re-built again. There is an altar in it made of marble. There is a story told that the people used to lock up the church and that when they would come back in the morning it would be opened. This went on until the Church was left open altogeather. Another story is told that every night a ghost used appear on top of the church in

In the olden times there were great singers and story-tellers but most of them have died or have left our country but still there are a few of them to be found throughout the country and those would sing you beautiful songs and tell you most beautiful stories. James Mc Nerney was a great singer and also a great story-teller. I heard the people talking about all the great stories he could tell and all the amusing songs he could sing. The names of the stories were, "The Shade of the old apple tree," The Ghost of the valley, "The rich man's vision," The rich little maiden and "Pat the Piper. The names of the songs were, "Mother mo [?] ," The old bog hole, "The Red river valley," The shirt I left behind me and Pat O'Donnell. James Mc Nerney was a great singer and also a great story-teller and he is still alive and I often heard him singing, telling stories and dancing and he told me that he could not be corrected or surpassed in any of them and he also told me that this man in his young days spent his time at

    A Ghost Story
This is a very interesting story that the neighbours of Balgriffin tell. This ghost story is about a thing that happened a hundred years ago. It was in Mr. Hone's yard that this frightfull thing took place.
It was St Doloughs cross that started the awful thing. Mr. Hone dug up the sacred cross and brought it home. They were Protestants and hated Catholics. After that she was determined to keep it. While the monks were asleep she locked it up. That morning a strange man walked in and brought the cross back to its own position.
When Mrs. Hone saw the man she fainted. When Mrs. Hone got all right she followed him till he disappeared. Ever since then the cross has not moved.

her finger outstreched, as if she desired him to leave the ruins. Taking it as such as soon he could, he ran out. But try as he might he could not get away from the old castle, and he kept running round in a circle. At last he fell down, worn out by fatigue. He was picked up next morning by a friend. This story was ^ believed at first, but certain people who mocked at the story went to watch the castle. What ever they saw they got a great fright, but refused to tell anything about it. The story of the appearance of this unearthly woman has now become a legend, and local people talk of it as "The Ghost of Ballymoon Castle".

There is a ghost story told in our district. Often a coach and four horses were seen going up Liscarney avenue at midnight. A man in the neighbourhood made his mind up that he would have a ride in this coach. He waited one night for the coach to appear, but when he approached it, and was about to get in the coach disappeared. When the story was told many people were afraid to go past that place, especially at the dread hour of midnight. The coach has often been seen since then, but no one has ever since tried to have a ride in it.

This is a Ghost story which I heard.
Once upon a time there was a man in this parish who had a potato garden. Every morning when he went to see his potatoes there would be some of them gone. This night he said he would go to his potato garden, bring a bottle of whiskey, and a stick with him, and watch to see what was happening them. Sure enough he went.
He took a drink of the whiskey, and when he saw the ghost coming he ran towards him with his stick. The ghost hit him and turned his head back. The ghost said that if he came in the name of God he would tell him his story, but, as he did not he turned his head back.
It is said that his head remained backward until he died.

It is said that the old woman was so overcome with fright that she fell on the floor, dead. Nobody ever lived in the house since Kitty died. We are told the woman or man before dying were heard to say that they would haunt the wood. Now it looks like a big building a person would read about in a ghost story, but ever since the night of the death a legend says that a ghost is to be seen in the wood at night.
