- This is how people made candles long ago. At first the greace was rendered and put in a pot or can. Then a piece of cloth was got which served as a wick and dipped into the rendered greace and taken it out and let dry. Then it was dipped into the greace again and so on according to the size of the candle required.John Mc Namara,
