show makers in my district in olden times. Two, whose names were Fagans lived at Moortown, Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath. Another man named Lowndes lived near Maylough and one lived near Finea who was named Hughes. The fifth whose name was Thomas Lee lived also at Mooretown. All those made boots for youong and old men the elastic boots which has long since gone out of use. There are few shoemakers now because the boots are nearly all made in factories. In this district clogs were worn by nearly every person during Winter but were never made nearer than Kilnalack, Co. Cavan about the year eighteen hundred and seventy four. Leather was not manufactured nearer that Oldcastle about one hundred years ago. There is only one proverb I heard about boots and that is "Boots in the cradle and barefoot in the mud" which means that sometimes a person wears boots when he does not need them and will not have them to wear (them) when he does.
