   Tom Stapleton of Piperhill was noted for lifting heavy weights. On one occasion he lifted the anvil off its stand in the local forge, carried it across the road and threw it over the fence and then replaced it on the stand in the forge again.

   John Davis of Foilaclug who lived on a little height which may still be seen in Tim Ryan’s field, lifted a quarter cask of porter on to a counter. This man used also mow an acre of hay in a day with a scythe for his meals which were poor, and the small wage of a penny. I got this information from Timothy Ryan, Foilaclug, Cappawhite, Co. Tipperary.
