- (continued from previous page)to the ground. One young girl named Ellie O'Connor of Gleann a loca Ballydesmond was badly injured. Mr. O'Herlihy was a personal friend of Pad Gruney's - both were tenants on the Scrahan lands after 1909. - Pad often told Mr OHerlihy of his Campaigning days. It appears that Pad would not take anyone else into his confidence and worked (when out of for destruction) alone. He admitted that he set fire to Corbett's cabin in October 1880 and having seen the fire take firm hold he walked to Kanturk a good 14 miles - to establish an alibi. He then returned to Rathmore by train that evening and was very surprised to hear of the conflagration.The Land League built houses for the evicted tenants and saw to their needs through the dark days.Other items of information which Mr OHerlihy gave me:-
(1) Last of the Hedge-teachers was Jack McAuliffe Ballydesmond.(2) Mrs O'Riordan of Cullen was the last of the O'Keiffe's of Cuilionn Ní Caion - she died over 50 years ago.(3) The trade of 'Plucker' (of Geese) was a common-one years ago. The more genteel name was "Feather Monger".(4) Bread was distributed to poor children of the school 1879 - The Bakery was across the road at Denis Lonchan's (now Davis D. Shahan)
