the Hand or Jack the Brush, so called because he used collect old horse hair and give brushes instead. He sleeps by the kitchen fire in a farmer's house. He never takes off his clothes but when bedtime comes he takes off his boots and sticks his feet into a bag of hay and sleeps soundly until morning.
He draws in turf and water in payment for his lodgings. He goes to local sports playing the Three card trick" and when he has won a few shillings he drinks it in the local publichouse. He brings accounts of matches, weddings, wakes and funerals.
The special times for the assembling of all the tinkers are March Fair, St. John's Day and Dromagh Well Day. They also call on their way to Bally vourney Well.
The Sheridans, although tinkers are great judges of horses and travel from fair to fair with the horse buyers. They are considered very wealthy men.
