it was over, and the company started on the homeward journey, best fighters on each side of the Clan were selected, and fierce encounters often took place between both parties. Of course this did not happen only when the crowd were well drunk. When the fight was over and both parties on good terms with each other the wedding feast began. It usually consisted of potatoes and meat, and other kinds of food followed immediately after. There was no end to what porter and whiskey used be there, the whiskey usually being poteen.
The Irish are very superstitious and consider the following signs unlucky omens. If the day of the wedding was wet the Irish considered it very unlucky, as the saying says "Joy to the corpse that rain shall fall upon, as joy to the bride that the sun shall shine on". They consider it unlucky to get married on either Monday, Wednesday, or Friday, and also in the colours green or black. The brides mother is supposed not to accompany her to the chapel on the day.
