  2. In the penal days the teachers were forbidden to have schools or to teach the children. If they were caught teaching they would be sinserely punished or put to death. Therefore they used be teaching by the hedges and lonely places.
    The Schools were then called hedge-schools. They were mostly built of sods. In the summer time they usen't have any school-house only teaching in the open air. The school-master then was called the hedge-school-master.
