  1. I took down the following story as 'twas told to me.
    About ninety years ago the people of the Island were very very poor. A good number of families were also almost starving. At this time a "Minister" by the name of Spring came to the Island. He was a Kerryman and he had plenty of money. He built a school on the Island - "no trace of this building today, but the site on which 'twas built is still pointed out by the old people". He also built a house which he used as a Church.
    He went around among the people, and offered them money and food, if they would send their children to his school, and attend service in his Church on Sundays. Most of the inhabitants were forced through poverty to accept this money and food. Those who attended his Church got plenty money
