- It was rushes the people had for thatch long ago. They used to get the rushes in the bogs. There was a bed in every kitchen and it was called a 'settle bed'. In some of the houses, there were chimneys. The chimneys were made of yellow clay and hay. There were fires in the middle of the floors, and two doors in every house. They used to put a stick across inside the door to keep it shut. There were two small windows in the houses. Before glass was used in windows, people used to put rushes or boards in them. There were half doors in some of the houses and a bad clay floor. They used turf for fires and rushes for light.
