“Once an old fox roamed about this part of the country and got so clever that it was impossible to catch him.”
Once an old fox roamed about this part of the country & got so clever that it was impossible to catch him. He was in many tight corners but always managed to escape.
One night he came into a cottage by eating a hole through the bottom of the door. In those days country folk kept their fowl in their dwelling houses, and when the fox entered he at once went for the fowl.
The man of the house was aroused by the cackling of the fowl & seeing the fox trying to get off with one of them, sprang to the door to prevent the fox from getting out. The fox at once let go the hen and seized the man's trousers, which were hanging near the fire, and threw them across the coals.
The poor old man thought more of his trousers than of the hen, and especially since there was a pound note in the pocket of them, jumped to the fire & snatched them out while reynard made his escape through the hole by which he had come in.
