There is a fort in a field owned by Gibney Victualler, Ballinacargy and the fairies are supposed to be there every night. There is a path going through the field and in a certain unknown place in it there's a "stray" sod, and if you put your foot on it you'll be led astray. John Gaynor of Ballinacargy who was then 11 years old was coming home froma wake about three years ago and he walked on the "stray" sod and was brought back through Lakenstown. His father went to look for him and got him at a river called the Gurtheen 11/2 miles away from home. He was about to try to jump over it, (it is fairly wide and deep) and when his father spoke to him he said he didn't know where he was.

A drink or even a sweet will leave him alright again. One place frequented by the Fear Gorta is about three miles from Castlepollard on the road to Mullingar - just in the shadow of Knock Eyon. Another place is Putgarra in Toneyowen.

The Lepreacan or geanncanach as he was called is very good to people who are good to him but he is also very spiteful to those who are not good to him. If anyone cut a "lone hawthorn bush" the fairies would revenge it on them by putting thorns in their bed or by bringing ill-luck on them.
In one case a local farmer cut a "lone hawthorn bush" on his land, he borught a cart to take it home but when he put it on the cart it fell off, having done this many times and having seen that he could not load it, he had to leave it where it was.

The cure for it was to turn your coat inside out. Then say an Our Father and three Hail Marys and the "charm" was gone.
On a Hallow eve night the people would sweep the hearthstone very clean. They then would go to bed. In the morning they would look for a footstep on the hearthstone. If the step went towards the door it was the trace of a coffin. If it did not it was all right. When two persons would wash their hands in a basin, the second person would spit in the basin before he washed because if he did not do so
