  1. Local Marriage Customs
    Marriages take place most frequently during the Summer. Thursday, Friday and Saturday are the unlucky days, and the unlucky months are may and november. The following is an old rhyme in connection with marriage-
    "Monday for health,
    Tuesday for wealth,
    Wednesday the best day of all,
    Thursday for losses
    Friday for crosses.
    On Saturday the worst day of all.
    People in Athboy make pancakes on Shrove Tuesday.
    Matches are made in this parish.
    The money given as dowry depends on the means of the brides parents. Stock or goods were sometimes given instead of money. Sometimes marriages took place in the houses. One such marriages took place in a house in Kilkeelan, Athboy, Co. Meath, between a mr. Carey and an invalid named Anne Gorman, about eighty years ago.
