    and the lower half kept closed so that pigs or fowl would not enter the kitchen.
    Turf was used for fire and candles and rushlights were used for light. These candles were made locally. Though thatched houses are still common the walls are now built of stone and mortar and the windows are made with glass which makes them more comfortable and more lasting.

  2. The old houses which existed in former times had roofs of thatch and galvanised and felt. They used to thatch them with rushes and straw which they would have themselves and they would buy the felt and galvanised in a shop.
    The old houses had a bed in the kitchen, and it used to be beside the back wall it was called a settle bed. The fire place was sometimes at the side wall and sometimes at the
