  1. A man named Phil Smith of Corduff, Ballinagh Co. Cavan, who died recently at an advanced age was counted a man of ability and strength and endurance.
He could set more potatoes than any other workman in the district.
He set half a rood in the day, at the beginning and end of each ridge he took a mouthful of whiskey.
He could neither read, nor write, but if he heard the newspaper read, he could repeat it over again to anyone He was also of a jovial disposition.
Transcribed by a member of our volunteer transcription project.
