  1. Football was little known in days gone by, but some years ago there was a great football match played at Avondale between the teams Avon Mor & Ballinacor & there were 21 men on each side.
    It was townland against townland
    No one remembers how the refereeing was done
    The ball was size 5. The Camans were hand sticks & the ball was made of rags.
    At football the men did not wear football boots as they do now, nor did they wear jerseys
    Scores were about 18 points
    Mr Nolan Clash Rathdrum now aged 70 was a noted footballer.
    Mr Bergin Newbawn Rathdrum was a noted weight thrower.
