  1. Adjoining the townland of Newtown in which our school is built, is the townland of Clonegath. In this townland, on the farm of Mr. Nolan is a fairly large marsh or bog, known locally for some unknown reason as "the Sailor's Bog". On one of the fences which surround this marsh is a fairly large stone. This stone bears the hand-print of a very large person embedded in it, and on this account, this stone is known as "the Hand-stone". Many stories are told in the distrct concerning its origin. One of those stories runs as follows :- Two rival giants once lived on the plain between the marsh and Mt. Leinster, and they had a fight. The Mt. Leinster giant seized a huge stone to cast at his opponent. He grasped the stone so angrily and cast it with such force that the print of his five fingers
