  1. Seir Kyran
    There is a very ancient and interesting place called Saint Kyrans or Seir Kieran about 4 miles from Birr in the parish of Seir Kieran, in the baorny of Ballybritt. It is in the diocese of Killaloe.
    This place was at one time called Saiger which is said to have been the name of a fountain or it might probably come from the Irish Saigeoir, a sawyer, owing to the number of wooden buildings of which the town was composed.
    As early as the year 444 there was a celebrated college here and a town grew up to be an extensive city. The traces of numerous deep ditches and high ramparts about the place encompassing nearly ten acres indicated that the place was of much importance.
