   The above account was got from John McNamara, Moorpark St, Birr, son of Michael and nephew of Patrick McNamra. The trade is still carried on by his cousins Thomas and Denis at John's Mall, Birr.

   Tanning of Leather Above the old bridge of Birr which is situated at the end of Bridge St leading to High St there was a tanyard named Kinehan's Tanyard. It is only a few years ago that the hole in which the leather was tanned was filled up. This house and yard is now occupied by a man named Flannagan. Hundreds of loads of stuff were required to cover in this hole it was so deep. Boots and shoes were made in Birr in those days. A family named Winters employed a great many workers in their shop in Moorpark.
