- (continued from previous page)bride was played on cards. In this case there were four suitors for the girl and the father could not decide between them. So they all agreed to play three 25's and who ever won the three games would get her. I always heard that the girl would have willingly accepted any of the men for a husband only the man who won her but she would not break her father's word so she married him.
They lived happy together and they died over 40 years ago at an advanced age.
Mr Kiernan's father remembered when all the marriages took place in the bride's houses and he saw several marriages celebrated in his father's house because the priests lodged there.
In regard to the days the people still believe the old saying
Monday for health,
Tuesday for wealth,
Wednesday the best day of all,
Thursday for losses
Friday for crosses'
Saturday no day at all.
There is an objection to marry in May and August and the most marriages used to be at Shrove but the word Shrove is never heard the people call it "Siraft"(continues on next page)
