  1. The present School in Mullinalachta was built in 1885 and the first teachers were Mr James and Mrs Coen.
    The school before this one was built in 1832. It was built along the present churchyard wall but there is no trace of it now. There were two schools both thatched and joined together and I remember seeing both used as dwelling houses 40 years ago.
    The first teachers who taught in there were Mr Briody and a Mrs Brady: Mrs Brady's husband died and she married Francis Reilly.
    When Mr Briody died he was replaced by Mr Anthony Kiernan who was the last male teacher in it.
    Mr Briody had a School before 1831 in Toome but it was held in an outhouse in Mr James Kiernan's yard. The outoffice must have been occupied at night because the pupils had to carry in oak blocks each morning for seats and a large stone served for the Master's desk and this large stone is in the wall of the present outhouse.
