  1. Bread was made from wheat, oats and rye in olden times. The people ground their own oats and wheat, and rye with a quern.
The difficult kinds of bread made were:- wheaten bread, rye bread, oatmeal bread, boxty bread, barley bread and potato cake. The bread was made with buttermilk. Potato cake was made from boiled potatoes which were mashed up with flour and salt. Then this mixture was boiled on the griddle.
Long ago people made bread every day. A pot oven was the name of the vessel in which the bread was baked.
Marks were always put on the top of the bread before putting it into the oven so that it would rise properly. Bread was made in front of the fire. A toaster was the name given to the support of the griddle, griddle bread was often made.
Currants were always put in the bread at wedding feasts.
