  1. Many years ago there lived a very poor barber in Athlone. He had no shop and had to do his work in a shed. One day a man was getting his hair cut and the barber told him that every night after 12 o'clock fairies were to be seen around the shed. The man who was getting his hair cut was always boasting and he said he wouldn't be afraid of fairies. So the barber asked him if he would sit in the shed that night between 12 and 1. The man said he would. He went to the shed and sat there till one o'clock but nothing happened, so he said he would go back. On leaving the shed he had to cross a stile, and as he was climbing over, something caught him and held him fast. After a hard struggle he broke away and ran home as fast as his legs would carry him. The next morning he told the Barber, the fairies nearly caught him, but the Barber found out what happened him. Soon after he saw a bit of the man's coat caught in the stile.
