    There were thousands of people present from Connaught and Leinster. But the contest was of short duration as Ferris was no match for Mullally.
    A noted runner was Michael Hallegan of Collierstown and on the same day that Mullally defeated Ferris there were running contests in which competitors from all over Leinster and Connaught took part. Most of the contests were won by Hallegan.
    A long distance travelled by people on foot in olden days was to the fair of Tralee. Their purpose in going there was to purchase Kerry Cows. The journey back driving the cows must have been very interesting as there are a number of stories in existance of the adventures of these men on the homeward journey.
    A great swimmer was a Thomas Maxwell of Laragh. He swam Lough Owel from the Frewin side to Mullingar side. He offtered £20 by Lord Greville if he preformed the return
