My father said to me, "my lad,
    this treasure I'll leave you,
But free from stain it must remain,
as pure as the morning dew,
No graft or gain or lucre's stain
    will taint its emerald sheen,
So take your place, but ne'er disgrace
    your father's oul' caubeen."

He says to me, "my boy, machree
    this hat saw better fare.
'Mid glade and glen with the Fenian men,
    where Freedom's fires flare."
Neath it I swore in days of yore,
    beside the old boreen.
That I'll be true to Roisin Dhu
    and my father's oul' caubeen.
