  1. In olden times food was not as plentiful as it is now. The children used to be very lucky if they got a few slices of oaten-meal bread without butter or jam on it. They used to take porridge and nothing else for their breakfast and fish and potatoes and salt for their dinner. They never drank tea or they never had any meal between their dinner and their supper and they took porridge again for their supper. On Hallow’een night they would make “colcannon” out of potatoes for their supper.
