  1. The Care of the Feet
    In olden times in this district no-one man, woman, or child ever wore a boot till he was over twenty-one. In fact there were people who never wore boots from the day of their birth to that of their death.
    At the present time one never sees a grown person without boots or shoes, except when he is wheeling turf in a bog, but all school-boys go barefoot to school in the summer months and often late in the autumn.
    In a few houses in the district, even until this day the water used for washing the feet is left behind the kitchen door at night; it is said that it keeps fairies and evil things like that from entering the house at night.
    There are no boots made locally now, but fifty years ago there was a noted family of boot-makers in Borrisnoe, a mile and a half west of this school. The name of this family was "Gray" and one of them
