- Candles were made on a large scale in this district many years ago. In some houses there was a special day for making candles, and on this day there were enough candles made for a year. The fat that was left over from dinners during the year was rendered and made into tallow. When the candle-making day came the kitchen was cleared and huge quantities of tallow rendered in great pots there. The week before the day for the candle-making came a long thick rushes were gathered and dried. These when peeled made the wicks for the candles. Some people made weeks of twisted sheep wool. When everything was ready the candles were made. Each wick was drawn through the tallow and allowed to cool. When they were(continues on next page)
