    He challenged the landlord's agent to a duel but he refused. At the same time he went away & left the widow in possession of her home.
    Hayes was a noted duellist and was a master with every kind of a weapon. It is told that one day he was standing on the bridge over the Mulcair at Dromkeen when some soldiers and officers were passing by. One of the latter, when told who Hayes was and what a marksman he was challenged him to a duel. Much to the officer's surprise Hayes accepted his challenge & pistols were agreed on. Wishing to warn him the officer said Hayes, you must know that I can shoot a swallow flying. "Well" answered Hayes You may but the swallow had no pistol.
    The signal was given and down went the officer.
    On another occasion there was a card party at Hayes' house and opposite Hayes at the table sat his first cousin
