Well when the money is paid to him he hands say fifteen shillings or perhaps a pound to the buyer as "luck". The luck given in the sale of bonhams is usually a shilling per head.
When a bargain has been made the parties concerned show their agreement by slapping their hands. Sold animals are marked in various ways. Some mark them by clipping the hair at the side. Others mark them with something like an extra thick pencil known as a "raddle".
