  1. Castlemartyr can justly claim to be numbered among the interesting historic places in Ireland. The fertile soil of the countryside and of the Demesne in particular made it a coveted possession in such a way that many battles were fought over it. In the 16th Century it was ruled by the Geraldines. And in that Century the Castlemartyr Fitzgeralds fought for their kinsmen. And Ormond hanged Lady Fitzgerald in front of the Castle, though the Fitzgeralds returned to live in the Castle their prosperity was gone. Tradition
