    In older times Mary Eve was supposed to be a very "airy" evening because the farmers were afraid to leave out their cows. They believed the fairies would milk them, but it was not the fairies that used to milk them but their own neighbours dressed up, with "pikes" (forks) and spades and shovels under their clothes.
    If the cows are cross they are tied by the legs with a spancle. They are sometimes tied from horn to leg.
