   to get out an apple without touching the tub. If they succeed in getting it out, the prize awarded is the apple.

   After this three saucers are got and placed on the table earth is put in one, water in another, and a ring in the third. Then one person is blindfolded and be chooses a saucer, if he gets the one with the ring its a sign that he'll get married first. If he gets the one with the earth, it is a sign that he will be first to die. If he gets the one with the [(wart)] water, it's a sign that he will cross the sea, before the year is ended.

   Nuts are also used on that night. First of all some of them are eaten, and then they are burned. The name of a girl is written on one, and the name of a boy on another, they are both put on the fire together, if they keep near each other, its a sign they will get married, if they jump away from each other it is a sing they will never get married.

   Then the family circle gathers around the fire, while stories are told by the older members
