The Costello estate was one of the first sales under the Ashbourne Ach. It was divided into farms at the will of the landlord and later when a son of a family married a potion was given to him. In this way the farms were subdivided.
The people on the Costello estate had to pay enormous rents. In Drimacoo, for instance, where the land is very bad the rent was as high as £1 an acre.
