  2. Late Mrs Meagher's Toast

    When the late Mr. Michael Meagher of Rathmacan, Tullaroan, was elected M.P. for North Kilkenny he gave a party to celebrate the event.
    At the party he called on his mother to give a toast. This is the toast she gave:-
    "May the God above
    Send down a dove
    With wings as sharp as razors
    To cut the throats of the Comer rogues
    Who deprived us of our Leader."
    The leader mentioned was Parnell who whilst holding a political meeting in Castlecomer Co. Kilkenny had some lime pelted at him by his opponents, his eyes were badly burned. This incident gave rise to the thought underlying the late Mrs. Meagher's toast
