    going to sell an ass, the day before the fair they would put the ass into a corner, then two or three of them would get sticks and they would beat the poor ass until they would raise lumps on him. Then the next day they would go off to the fair with the ass. After a little while there a man would come up to buy him and he would say to the tinker 'is he any good' and the tinker would say 'Oh! You need only leave your hand on him and he will go, sure, he is as honest as a priest.' Then the man would leave his hand on him and the poor ass would be so sore he would throw a jump as high as a house. Then the man would buy him and after a few days the ass would not stir. So the tinkers are very clever.
    If you gave them lodging for one night, they would come again the second night. Some of them earn their living by making pints and selling them, others by playing flutes or tin whistles or melodeons.
