    on the Keadue-Drumshanbo road a few yards from Arigna Railway Station. Here my grandfather proceeded three days a week and the boys for several miles around assembled to receive the only education available at that time. I have heard while the teacher was instructing those juveniles, especially in Arithmetic one boy always lay concealed on the look out for one of England's cruel soldiers whom both children and teacher feared.
    Almost in every townland those schools existed: the subjects principally taught being:- Irish, Latin and Arithmetic. The students were without seats, the cold damp earth being their resting places while receiving instructions and the only school materials used were slate and pencil. Those good teachers performed this duty without any remuneration whatever. They did it
