    Long ago the people of Ireland were very particular about laying out a corpse. It was only a certain old woman who could lay out a body. When the man or woman passed away, two old women were immediately sent for. The left their own houses and gave the account to all the neighbours as they came along. They finally came to the house where the person was dead, and started caoining. They then laid the dead person on a table with a sheet underneath. The feet of the corpse were usually turned towards the grave. When that was finished they lighted six candles which were already provided. An extra candle was put on the table without being lit.
