  1. "Hallowe'en" as the eve of All Saints' Day is called is eagerly looked forward to by all young people. It is a night of feasting and merry-making, of laughter and of playing all kinds of tricks.
    The children have a high tea their interest being centred in the cake or brack containing the ring, the nut, and the cross and other things which are usually put in it on this occasion. The person who finds the ring gets a great clap and has to put up good humouredly with many a laugh and joke from the other children. The finder of the nut comes in for his share of laughter, too, but the one who gets the cross escapes lightly for his lot is to embrace the religious life.
    After the "Snap Apple" "Ducking" and "Dallog" are played in turn. Then follow the tricks which prove far more exciting. Everybody is anxious to know who will cross water but no one likes to be the one who is supposed to die first.
