One of these unjust laws was that the Irish peasant must give one tenth of his crops to the parson for at that time the Protestant church was the church of Ireland. When the corn was cut the peasants put it in a haggard on the townland to be brought away later by the parson's men. But the parsons had'nt it all their own way, for at night when everything was quiet, men came to the haggard in which the corn was stored and threshed it taking it away with them when they had finished. This was very dangerous for the country was heavily patrolled by armed military and police. The white-boys as they were called were often shot dead or wounded, making their escape. if caught alive they were given a sentence in an Irish prison or transported.
