  1. In the olden times the people were more industrious than the people of the present day. Long ago there were no factories and they had to make their own implements. Basket-making was very common then and even yet they are still made. They used to take the bark of rods and make baskets with them. There were no nails, ploughs, gates etc manufactured long ago like now, and the smiths used to make them. Flax growing was a great industry in Ireland long ago. The people used to make ropes and thread from it. Before oil was invented or before it was known what oil was people used to get stuff like fur in the bogs and they used to burn it for light. They used also make rush candles. People haven't to work so hard now as the people long ago. There implements now for everything. Long ago the people had to dig their land, but now the people have every accommodation they want.
