  1. A shipwreck:- Near the coast behind the village of Cliffoney in Co. Sligo, is a small island, remarkable as being the spot where three ships of the Spanish Armada were wrecked in 1588. The coast, owing it is thought, to its roughness has always been a resort for whales.
Near the Abbey of Staad, founded by St. Molaise, in the sixth century, is Streedagh Strand where lie the bodies of one thousand Spaniards washed up after the Armada wreck.
