    the next piece of straw. The Scolbs were beaten securely into place with the mallet. The thatcher 70 yrs ago was an important man and busy as all houses were then thatched. He was also an expert mat-maker. These he made of straw. They were used for many purposes, bed mattresses, cradle mattresses, floor mats. Small ones were used on donkeys' backs under the wooden straddle, used for taking the turf out of the bog in creels.
    The thatcher also made baskets and creels and Pardógs. The creels had fixed bottoms. The Pardógs had loose bottoms rod-hinged at one side which were kept in place by means of a thick stick ran through a rod loop at open side. Large, oval, saucer-shaped baskets he made for carrying turf, potatoes etc. A thick seasoned rod was used as the foundation which started at the brim or mouth. Thick split rods made the ribs, and then seasoned rods were woven between an open handle - a space at either side - under the rim - served as handles.
