  1. The sky gets dark and cloudy when it is going to rain and the sky looks low. The moon has a halo round it. When the swallows fly near or low rain is almost near or approaching. If it rains on St. Smithin's day it will rain for forty days after. If a cold August follows a hot July its a token of a hard winter. If soot falls down the chimney it is the sign of rain. If the sky is red to the South in the morning it is the sign of rain. When the wind is from the East it is the sign of frost. When the curlew screeches it is the sign of rain. The sea-gulls going from shore to land is a sign of hard weather. If a cold August follows a hot July it is the sign of a hard winter. When a storm is there the cows turn their heads up to the sky. When the wild geese fly from shore to land, it is a great sign of frost. When the thrush stays near the hedge it is a sign of frost. When the Tralee Hills look near it is a sign of rain. If the crickets sing it is the sign of rain. It is the sign of rain if the worm crosses the road in the evening. If the blackthorn tree flowers early it is the sign of a wet summer.
