    They pretended not to notice him.
    He followed them on till they came to a gap in a fort.
    Then one of the girls turned back, and told him he was far enough. He stopped and watched them and they went out of his sight into the fort. He got afraid as it was getting very dark.
    He never stayed out late at night after that.
