  1. There was a hedge school at Costrea in a granary. The teachers who taught in these schools were never in college and they got no government pay. Nearly every day the children brought a penny each The people who taught lived in the locality. At this time they had no pens and they wrote with quills and they wrote on slates with the shanks of clay pipes. They sat on straw on the ground and wrote on slabs of stone.
