- (continued from previous page)The corncrake is heard in the meadows when the "after-grass" is growing tall and she remains there until the meadows are mown. Sometimes at night we hear seven or eight corncarkes singing their hoarse songs in the meadows. The gold-finch, green-finch and corncrake also fly away to another country when winter is approaching.
The crow and mag do much harm to the farmer's crop - the crow eats his potatoes and both crow and mag pick the seed from the corn. Scare-crows are put up in the fields of potatoes to frighten away the birds. Sometimes a rat trap is set among the potato crop, so that a crow may be captured; this crow is then put hanging on a stick in the field as a(continues on next page)- Collector
