- The houses were thatched usually with rushes got in the fields. A bed was in the kitchen placed against the side -wall. The front of the chimney was made of stone. clay and wattles.There were houses having no chimney. There are no accounts of houses which had no glass for windows. The old floors were made of clay half-doors were common. and are still used. Timber, Turf and dry old sods, were used for fire. Rushlights, dips and candles were used for lights at night. Candles were not made locally.
