    Old people believed that if a man had a coal in his pipe they would not let him out for fear the butter would go along with him, They also believed that fairies could steal the butter and to prevent this they used to put a red coal under the churn or leave the tongs near it. If you went out early to the field where your neighbours cows are grazing and perform certain things the butter would follow you home.
