bird that follows the cuckoo is the bird that hatches the egg and rears her.
Tradition has given rise to legends that the birds got their speech on Christmas night, and that privilege is still granted at midnight to them. The cock crowed "Christus natus est,". The ox mowed ?, The sheep answered in "Bethlehem", The Ass brayed "Camus" and the other animals all got their different form of speech.
